Work Permit Process

Most foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Canada.

Types of work permits

Employer-Specific Work Permit
An employer-specific work permit restricts you to a specific employer, location, and duration.

Before applying for an employer-specific work permit, your employer must provide:

  • A copy of your employment contract

  • One of the following:

    • A copy of a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

    • An offer of employment number (for LMIA-exempt workers

Open Work Permit
An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for employers:​

Bringing Your Family
Your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children may be able to work, study, or live with you while you work in Canada.

Eligibility Criteria for All Applicants

When applying for a work permit in Canada, specific requirements must be met depending on your location. 

  • Demonstrate to an officer that you will leave Canada once your work permit expires.

  • Provide proof of sufficient funds to support yourself and your family during your stay and to facilitate your return home.

  • Adhere to Canadian laws and have no criminal record; a police clearance certificate may be required.

  • Ensure you pose no threat to Canada’s security.

  • Be in good health, potentially requiring a medical exam.

  • Avoid employment with employers deemed ineligible or non-compliant.

  • Refrain from working for employers involved in striptease, erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages.

  • Submit any additional documents requested by the officer to validate your eligibility for entry into Canada.
