Visiting Canada
Essential Information for Temporary Residents

Who is a Visitor?

A visitor is anyone legally entering Canada for a temporary purpose, such as tourism, business, or study, who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or holder of a minister’s permit.

Visa Requirements Most visitors need a visa unless exempted. The visa application involves a two-step process:

  1. Submit Application: Apply at the Canadian visa office in your region, possibly attending an interview to verify your visit's purpose, your intent to leave Canada on time, and your admissibility.

  2. Port of Entry (POE): Upon arrival, an immigration officer will ensure your admissibility to Canada.

Visa Types

  • Single Entry Visa: Valid for up to six months before travel.

  • Multiple Entry Visa: Valid for up to five years or until one month before your passport/re-entry visa expires. Typically allows a six-month stay per visit.

Temporary Resident Visa (TRV): A TRV is an official document placed in your passport, indicating you meet the requirements for temporary residence in Canada. You must obtain a TRV before traveling.

Do You Need a Visa or eTA?

  • Visa: Required for many foreign nationals.

  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): Required for visa-exempt travelers.

TRV Requirements To obtain a TRV, you must demonstrate:

  • Intent to leave Canada at the end of your stay.

  • Sufficient funds for your stay and return trip.

  • No intention to work or study without authorization.

  • Compliance with Canadian laws and no criminal record.

  • No security risk to Canada.

  • Good health (medical examination may be required).
