Studying in Canada

What is a Study Permit?

A study permit is an official document issued by Canada that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in the country. Most foreign nationals need this permit to study in Canada and must apply before traveling.

Eligibility Requirements To be eligible for a study permit, you must:

  • Be enrolled at a DLI.

  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province or territory where you plan to study

  • Prove you have sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses for yourself and any accompanying family members, and return transportation.

  • Obey the law, have no criminal record (police certificate may be required).

  • Be in good health (medical exam may be required).

  • Convince an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.

Responsibilities While Studying While in Canada on a study permit, you must:

  • Make progress in your studies.

  • Respect the conditions listed on your study permit.

  • Stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements.

Possible Permit Conditions Your study permit may specify:

  • If you are allowed to work in Canada.

  • If you can travel within Canada.

  • The specific date you must leave Canada.

  • Where you can study (specific DLI listed).

  • Whether you need an immigration medical examination.

Validity of Study Permit

  • Generally valid for the duration of your study program plus an additional 90 days to prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay.

  • If you need to take prerequisite courses, the permit will cover the length of those courses plus one year.

  • If your permit expires before you finish your studies, you must apply for an extension.

Completion of Studies

  • Your permit becomes invalid 90 days after you complete your studies, regardless of the date printed on the permit.

  • Completion is recognized by a letter, transcript, degree, or diploma from your institution.

Post-Graduation Opportunities: After graduation, you may be eligible to work temporarily or even apply to live permanently in Canada.
